Project Description
The Polar Science Early Career Community Office (PSECCO) and the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) are hosting a 3rd Polar Early Career World Summit at the ICARP IV / ASSW 2025 meeting in Boulder, Colorado, USA. This summit will bring together the polar early career community from across disciplines and across the world to discuss priorities to feed into the ICARP IV process in 2025-2026 and the next International Polar Year (IPY) in 2032-2033. IASC funding will support the travel of polar early career researchers (ECRs) to attend the World Summit, and by extension the ASSW 2025 and ICARP IV meetings, ensuring a strong presence of ECRs at these meetings. This project seeks to engage as diverse a group of polar early career community members as possible, with attendees from, but not limited to, the disciplines of the IASC WGs, and specifically welcome Arctic Indigenous participants as important voices at the World Summit. This project will engage ECRs in the lead-up to the 3rd World Summit through a Planning Committee to create a meaningful program designed by and for ECRs. The Planning Committee will decide how to align summit activities with the ICARP IV goals and contribute to the 5th IPY. The primary short-term results of our activity will be: (1) building and strengthening the polar early career community through the Polar Early Career World Summit, (2) increased early career attendance and engagement at ICARP IV and ASSW 2025, and, importantly, (3) strong contribution of the next generation to Arctic and Antarctic research priorities and knowledge gaps. It is critical that early career community members do not only participate in ICARP and IPY activities, but also help define and execute them, and this project helps facilitate this involvement.
