Climate intervention, or geoengineering, is increasingly discussed as a possible response to rapid Arctic warming. Yet major uncertainties remain about its risks, benefits, and real-world impacts. With growing interest from governments and private actors, there is an urgent need for clear, ethical, and science-based guidance, especially as interventions could affect ecosystems, Arctic communities, and regions far beyond areas of implementation and national borders. Two workshops held in 2024 highlighted the importance of establishing an IASC Action Group to address these challenges.
The ERCI will develop recommendations for responsible Arctic-focused climate intervention research. The group will be composed of 10-15 members, primarily from IASC working groups and indigenous representatives, and the group will coordinate with international partners to compile a prioritized list of IASC actions and prepare web material offering an informed Arctic perspective on climate intervention. A consolidated set of recommendations will be submitted to the IASC Council for approval.
The group got started in early 2026, with a first hybrid meeting at the ASSW 2026 in Aarhus, and continue through April 2027. Additional online sessions will be held between ASSWs.
