"Arctic Biodiversity Through the Lens" , supported by the Icelandic Ministry of Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Iceland, will be on display on Sæbrautin close to Harpa, Reykjavik, in the occasion of the 12th Ministerial meeting of the Arctic Council, marking the end of the two-year Icelandic Chairmanship term. The exhibit is composed of the winning images from the Arctic Biodiversity Through the Lens Photography competition organized and owned by the Conservation of Arctic Fauna and Flora (CAFF) Secretariat.
The Exhibit was created in occasion of the ASSW2020 in Akureyri, but due to COVID-19 Pandemic and the consequent moving of ASSW2020 online, it was displayed in summer 2020 in front of Hof, the cultural centre of Akureyri. This exhibition is part of the Icelandic Chairmanship of the Arctic Council 2019-2021 and the result of a collaboration between CAFF and the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC), with the support of Arctic organizations in Akureyri (alphabetical order): Arctic Services, the Fisheries Science Center at the University of Akureyri, the Icelandic Arctic Cooperation Network, the Icelandic Institute of Natural History, the Icelandic Tourism Research Centre, The Northern Research Forum (NRF) at the University of Akureyri, PAME (Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment), the Stefansson Arctic Institute, and the University of Akureyri.
The photography competition is intended to raise awareness of the importance of Arctic biodiversity, raise awareness of the multiple challenges facing Arctic biodiversity, and to celebrate the beauty of the Arctic. Furthermore, the goal of the competition is to raise awareness about the Arctic Biodiversity Congress, the Arctic Biodiversity Assessment, and the Actions for Arctic Biodiversity, which is the ABA Implementation Plan.
