IASC is delighted to announce the shortlist for the 2020 IASC Medal, awarded in recognition of exceptional and sustained contributions to the understanding of the Arctic.

The shortlisted candidates are:

  • Atsumu Ohmura for outstanding achievement in understanding complex climate and glacier relationships, thermal energy flow in the Arctic, and in building programs and data-archives in the Arctic

  • Peter Wadhams for outstanding achievement in understanding polar climate and sea-ice interactions, and the effect of the warming Arctic on sea ice loss and reduction of albedo

  • Sue Ellen Moore for outstanding achievement in understanding marine mammals as ecosystem sentinels and how climate change is influencing the phenology of Arctic species

IASC would like to thank the 2020 IASC Medal Committee, who reviewed the nominations: João Canário (Chair), Stanislav Ksenofontov, Karen Frey, and Guðrún Nína Petersen.

The winner of the 2020 IASC Medal is expected to be announced mid-February and the winner is expected to deliver an award lecture and be presented with their Medal at the Arctic Science Summit Week in Akureyri, Iceland.
