At its 2017 meeting at ASSW in Prague (Czech Republic), the IASC Council approved two new action groups to address the topics of “Communicating Arctic Science to Policymakers” and “Arctic Science and Business/Industry Cooperation.”
IASC Action Groups are established by the IASC Council to provide strategic advice concerning both long-term activities and urgent needs. They are expert groups typically with a one or two year mandate and conclude their task with a report to the Council.
The IASC Action Group on Communicating Arctic Science to Policymakers (CASP) is tasked with the development of a set of recommendations for IASC to enhance its provision of advice on issues of science in the Arctic and the communication of scientific knowledge to policymakers.

The IASC Action Group on Arctic Science and Business/Industry Cooperation (ASBIC) will facilitate discussions on how Arctic science can facilitate business and how business can facilitate Arctic science, whether through financing, data, or collaboration. In particular, this group is convening sessions that the 2017 Arctic Circle Assembly.

In addition, the IASC Council approved a scoping group on the subject of advising on better involvement of indigenous people and incorporating traditional knowledge into the full breadth of IASC activities. This group will work, over the course of the next year, to develop Terms of Reference for a full Action Group.
