With the 5th International Polar Year (IPY 2032–2033) already on the horizon, early career researchers have a unique opportunity to set the scientific and community agenda for a defining chapter in polar science. In preparation, we are excited to invite you to submit an abstract to AGU25 session: Early Career Priorities for the International Polar Year (C012).

Session Abstract (in brief):

With the next International Polar Year (IPY) happening in 2032-2033, discussions and planning around priorities for the 5th IPY are already underway. The early career community must be proactive in working together to establish what they want to focus on for a large and defining portion of their careers. This session aims to provide a platform for the Arctic and Antarctic early career community to share their priorities for the IPY as a first step toward integrating those ideas into international prioritization discussions and activities for the upcoming IPY. Submissions from groups and individuals are welcome. The session format will be a balance of short presentations on priorities and an interactive discussion amongst the session panelists. All session participants will have the opportunity to collaborate in producing a short white paper to share their perspectives on IPY priorities following AGU.

Abstract Submission Deadline: Wednesday, 30 July 2025 at 23:59 EDT (03:59 UTC)

How to Submit: Visit the session page and follow the “Submit Abstract” link:

We hope you’ll join us in discussing how polar early career researchers intend to steer the direction of polar science over the next several decades.

The  session organizers, including Ellie Miller,  IASC Fellow for the Cryosphere Working Group, are especially excited about how this session will amplify early career voices and help steer the direction of polar science for decades to come. We hope you’ll join us in this important conversation.

Looking forward to reviewing your ideas and seeing your contributions in New Orleans!
