The International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation (PA2F) in cooperation with the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) are excited to announce the recipients of the 2025 IASC Fellowship Program.
Ten successful early career researchers were identified for all available fellowships. APECS very kindly coordinated the application and review process; recommendations from APECS based on the peer review process were delivered for final selection to the IASC Working Group Chairs. The reviewers were impressed by the excellent quality of the applications.
The 2025 IASC Fellows are:
- Alistair Duffey (Earth sciences, University College London, UK) Atmosphere Working Group | Expertise: Atmospheric dynamics, solar geoengineering, stratospheric aerosol injection
- Alex Hall (Loughborough University, UK) – Atmosphere Working Group - IASC-PA2F Fellow | Expertise: Remote sensing, high latitude dust, satellites
- Ellie Miller (Colorado School of Mines, USA) – Cryosphere Working Group | Expertise: Paleoglaciology, Isotope Geochemistry, Subglacial Groundwater Modeling
- Leena Leppänen (Finnish Meteorological Institute, Finland) – Cryosphere Working Group IASC-PA2F Fellow | Expertise: snow physics, snow microstructure, in-situ snow measurements
- Henry Henson (Aarhus University, Denmark) – Marine Working Group | Expertise: Carbon cycling, Air-sea exchange, Ocean Freshening
- Clare Gaffey (Oregon State University, US) – Marine Working Group - IASC-PA2F Fellow | Expertise: Phytoplankton phenology, remote sensing
- Sophie Roher (The Institute for Circumpolar Health Research and the University of Toronto, Canada) – Social Human Working Group | Expertise: Health equity; social determinants of health, community-partnered research
- Charlotta Svonni (Várdduo - Center for Sámi Research, Umeå University , Sweden), Indigenous Fellow - Social Human Working Group - IASC Standing Committee on Indigenous Involvement | Expertise: Sámi education, Educational policy, Sámi history.
- Madelaine Anderson (Université de Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada) - Terrestrial Working Group | Expertise: tundra vegetation, hyperspectral data, phenology
- Scott Sugden (McGill University, Quebec, Canada) – Terrestrial Working Group - IASC-PA2F Fellow | Expertise: environmental microbiology; biogeochemistry; deglaciation
The IASC Fellowship Program provides the opportunity for early career researchers to become involved in leading-edge scientific activities at a circumarctic and international level, to build an international network, and also to develop management skills.
The IASC Fellows engage in the work of the IASC Working Groups (WGs): Atmosphere, Cryosphere, Marine, Social & Human, and Terrestrial. The IASC Indigenous Fellows engages also in the work of the IASC Standing Committee on Indigenous Involvement.
At times, IASC also offers special joint Fellowships in cooperation with other partners, which this year is the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation (PA2F). As part of the Polar Initiative with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, four of the IASC Fellowships 2025 are generously funded by the foundation.
The next round of applications will open in September 2025.
