At the Geophysical institute we have an open permanent position as Project Manager (Advisor) for the international secretariat of the Synoptic Arctic Survey, hosted by Norway and the UiB. The position is jointly funded by strategic allocations from the UiB and by the EU H2020 project ArcticPassion. The initial scope of the position may change with time, depending on future funding. Deadline for application is 9th November 2021.

About the project:

SAS is a bottom-up, researcher driven, initiative collecting vast amounts of empirical data in the Arctic Ocean through a set of coordinated expeditions onboard ice breakers and other types of research vessels. The goal with SAS is a complete characterization of Arctic hydrography and circulation, carbon uptake and ocean acidification, tracer distribution and pollution, and organismal and ecosystem functioning and productivity.

The current period for SAS runs from 2020-2022. A follow-up is planned for 2030 (SAS II) to give a decadal time window, overlapping with the UN's Ocean Decade. 

Work tasks:

The project coordinator will oversee and coordinate the activities of the SAS and ensure that they interact with ArcticPassion and other potential projects. The activities include: comprehensive tracking of research cruises, information management and distribution including maintaining webpages and social media, organization of webinars and workshops, networking including promoting SAS among stakeholders and policy makers.
