This conference will provide an opportunity to consider the current state of downscaling of climate data in the Arctic, and the incorporation of local data sets and knowledge to better understand potential future scenarios. It will also consider how to co-develop appropriate models and software that will allow northern peoples to undertake their own simulations and retain data sovereignty. The current themes are:
- Describe the needs and wishes of different user groups for spatial and temporal resolution in climate data;
- Co-create and implement methodologies for augmenting and enhancing existing methods of acquiring meteorological data (e.g. protocols for obtaining data from difficult-to-access areas);
- Validate and downscale climate response variables (e.g. vegetation, snow cover);
- Build locally dense descriptions of the environment (through community engagement and new tech, especially drones);
- Develop baseline technical standards for relevant simulation;
- Co-create interactive software;
- Support as requested and required.
- Develop a proposal for a MACS UArctic Thematic Network
- Others as suggested
The conference will have three outcomes. First, it will provide an opportunity to meet with and discuss this topic with a range of colleagues. Second, participants will be invited to contribute to the MACS 2025 Conference Proceedings; an open-source publication to ensure widespread dissemination. Third, a working group will be established to formally develop a proposal for a MACS UArctic thematic network.
The conference will be held at the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, 15 – 17 September 2025.
Deadline for proposals is 21 July 2025: CONFERENCE REGISTRATION AND PROPOSAL LINK
