3. Working Group news
i. Climate Reconstruction and Impacts from the Archives of Societies (CRIAS)
The final CRIAS workshop will be taking place in Uppsala, Sweden, on 21 August 2025 alongside the ESEH 2025 (European Society for Environmental History) conference. The workshop will include recent progress and the state of the field in historical climatology, planning for a working group synthesis product on climate histories, and discussions on future working groups and projects in climate history. > Calendar
ii. Human Traces
The recording and meeting minutes for the Human Traces webinar on “Human traces in lake sediments - Towards a synthesis in Europe” is available to watch online. The group’s aim is to produce a Europe-wide synthesis of the traces or effects of human activities on the environment through the study of lake sediments and thus continue the work begun by the Human Traces working group on other regions of the globe. During this workshop they drew up the broad outlines of this future synthesis: targeted sites, targeted proxies, targeted period, etc. If you are interested in joining this initiative, the group kindly invite you to fill out a short questionnaire (ca. 5 minutes), which will help them better understand your expectations and guide the next steps in this collaborative effort.

The session is on “Reconstructing past sea level and ice sheets over glacial cycles”. Abstract submissions are due by 30 July 2025. > Submit an abstract
iv. Past Ocean Oxygenation (PO2)
a. Registration for the PAGES-supported workshop on "Notable Hypoxic Events of the Geologic Past" taking place from 10–12 December 2025 in Raleigh, USA, is open. The workshop will be held in hybrid format. The deadline to register for attendance is 01 October 2025. There is also support available for early-career researchers and those from low- and middle-income countries. The deadline to apply for support is 15 September 2025. > More information
b. Duboc B et al. have published a new paper in Climate of the Past on "Simulated ocean oxygenation during the interglacials MIS 5e and MIS 9e". > Access paper
v. Pliocene and Miocene climate variability over glacial-interglacial timescales (PlioMioVAR)
The PlioMioVAR working group has successfully applied for a second working group phase. The second phase will officially commence in January 2026. Details of the anticipated timeline, new scientific goals, steering committee and data projects are available on the PlioMioVAR webpage.
vi. Volcanic Impacts on Climate and Society (VICS)
The VICS working group has successfully applied for a third working group phase. VICS Phase 2 sunset in 2022 and has returned in 2025 with a new steering group committee and set of scientific goals. If you are interested in VICS activities, feel free to join the mailing list. More information can be found on the VICS webpage.

International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP)
ICDP will be hosting an in-person workshop in South Africa from 16–17 October 2025: "ICDP PROTEA: Probing the heart of an earthquake and life in the deep subsurface". The workshop aims to examine the nucleation site of the M5.5 earthquake and the microbial ecosystem in and around the brine fissure in a deep South Africa gold mine. It will also conduct a seismic structure survey using a 3D network deployed along tunnels and in boreholes. The deadline for applications is 10 August 2025. > More information
5. Future Earth
How are authoritarian and far-right politics shaping the ecological crisis - and threatening climate science? The Pathways Initiative at Future Earth France is launching a new activity, the Pathways Deep Dive: Ecological crises and political tensions, to explore this critical connection, raise awareness, and build space for resistance and reflection in the sustainability science community. > More information on Deep Dive
6. Other news and opportunities
i. ContaSed 2025 - 3rd International Conference on Contaminated Sediments
The international conference ContaSed 2025 builds on the growing societal concern and urgent demand to consolidate scientific knowledge and understanding of the behavior of chemical contaminants in the environment, especially on fluvial and lacustrine sediments. The conference will be taking place from 2–4 September 2025 at the University of Bern, Switzerland, and online. The deadline for registration is 01 August 2025. > Calendar
