The Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP) is an eight-week immersion in the Juneau Icefield, duringwhich participants (undergraduate, graduate, and high school juniors and seniors) traverse from Juneau,Alaska to Atlin, British Columbia. The program starts with a week of initial mountain safety training,introductory academic lectures to prepare them for the Icefield, and field trips to nearby glaciers. Studentstraverse the icefield, participate in research projects guided by faculty mentors, assist in faculty research,and continue with the academic program of reading groups, workshops, lectures, and practical lessons.Later in the summer, students continue work on their research projects and do preliminary data analysis.After completing the traverse and arriving in Atlin, students finish their academic lessons and completetheir projects, communicating their results to local residents during a public presentation. This proposalsupports student tuition and equipment rentals for students from communities underrepresented inglaciology
