IGS International Symposium on Sea Ice Across Temporal and Spatial Scales, June 2023, Bremerhaven, Germany

The International Glaciological Society (IGS) will hold the next International Symposium on Sea Ice in Bremerhaven, Germany, 4-9 June 2023. The IGS Sea Ice Symposia take place every 4–5 years and are the worldwide most renown conferences for discussion on sea ice and its interaction with the atmosphere, ocean, and ecosystem in the climate system.

For the 2023 conference IGS selected Bremerhaven as venue and the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and University of Bremen to be hosts of the symposium. We expect about 300 participants. In this project we requested support for Early Career Scientists (ECS) and Indigenous Scientists (IS) to attend the symposium.

Sea ice is an important component of the Earth’s climate system and strongly affects marine ecosystems and human activities in both hemispheres. Sea ice is changing rapidly on various temporal and spatial scales, and systematic observations and modeling across these scales are required to better understand underlying processes and interactions, and to predict the ice’s future fate. While the focus of the symposium will be on the physical ocean-ice-atmosphere system, cross-cutting interdisciplinary contributions are invited from fields like sea ice ecology and biogeochemistry, ice engineering, human use of the sea ice environment, and others.
