The Arctic Ocean Science Board (AOSB) which merged with IASC in 2009 to become the Marine Working Group was established in May 1984. The AOSB filled a recognized need to coordinate the priorities and programs of countries and institutions engaged in research in the Arctic Ocean and adjacent seas. It was a non-governmental body with members from research and government institutions in 16 countries who met annually to promote coordination and establish joint priorities and programs. From 2001 until 2009, the AOSB met as part of the joint Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW) and was a member of the planning and coordination team for the ASSW. The secretariat for the organization was supported by the National Science Foundation of the United States.
